Product Description
The pen is used to inject the medicine. The active ingredient is a protein called interferon beta-1a. Interferons are naturally occurring substances that the body makes to help protect against infection and disease. The protein contained in the drug consists of exactly the same components as the interferon beta in the human body.
The medicine is used to treat multiple sclerosis (MS). Treatment with the medicine can help prevent MS from getting worse, but it does not cure the disease.
Multiple sclerosis is associated with nerve damage (brain or spinal cord). In MS, the body's defense mechanism acts against its own myelin - the medullary sheath, which is the "insulating layer" that surrounds nerve fibers. When the myelin becomes damaged, messages between the brain and other parts of the body are disrupted, causing the symptoms of MS. The drug appears to work by stopping the body's defense mechanisms from attacking the myelin.
